Louie rounds out the trio of Donald Duck's nephews. In the 2017 DuckTales he is the schemer: the one most interested in shortcuts, get-rich-quick plans, and whether Uncle Scrooge's money might someday trickle down.

A family of names

The nephews belong to a large, well-documented duck family tree. A few relatives, for orientation:

Why three?

Three is the smallest number that makes a crowd. A pair of nephews could take turns; three can interrupt each other, split up at a fork in the road, and still leave one behind to get into trouble. Stories use this a lot:

• one nephew distracts Donald
• one consults the Guidebook
• one does the thing they were told not to

The order of the names never changes, even when the order of the ducks does.
